"What are you doing, Graytiger?" Blizzardfur mewed cooly in his deep voice, staring down the NightClan deputy with his placid gaze. Graytiger lashed his bushy tail and growled, "Nothing! We were on our side of the stream!" The white Rainclan deputy flicked his tail dismissively and countered coldly, "Since when was your side a fox length away from the real border?"

Spottedbelly and company were just beginning to mingle back into the patrol, their numbers swelling with at least eight warriors. Graytiger and his patrol glared at them fiercely, anger brimming from their bristling pelts. Mightyleap came to stand on Blizzardfur's left flank, Quakeheart on the deputy's right. Blizzardfur's amber eyes turned to slits as Graytiger replied dryly, "Since now, I suppose. After all, it's not like RainClan can actually defend its borders." Spottedbelly unsheathed her claws and growled under her breath. How naive! she thought mockingly, wondering what they would say once she had a claw in one of their throats. Beside her, Laureltail was the same, a terrible anger in his eyes.

Icepath and Feathermoon let out defiant yowls of outrage, and two NightClan warriors let out caterwauls as well. Spottedbelly tried to identify the warriors that were trespassing, but could only register Shadeheart and Graytiger. The others were anonymous to her.

Blizzardfur lashed his tail for silence in his group, glaring at the intruders with malice. "Is it a fight that you want, code breakers?" He spat. All of the cats looked to be bracing themselves as Graytiger's hoarse mew answered, "If you have a death wish; sure!" The two deputies lashed their tails, issuing the charge.

Spottedbelly immediately found herself being challenged by a brown and white tom, his fangs bared and his claws lashing at her muzzle. Spitting furiously, she side-stepped and lunged at the tom's side. She landed a blow to his shoulder but was loosened by a strong cuff to the ear. Spottedbelly ignored the pain and attacked again, this time getting a firm grip on his front leg. The mottled she-cat pulled hard and sent the tom to yanking himself free and stumbling backward. Flowerpool took over rather quickly and sent the tom running off into NightClan territory. "And don't come back, Longfeather!" the tabby warrior yowled, throwing herself into the battle again. Spottedbelly veered around, looking for another opponent. "Spottedbelly, look out!" Laureltail's voice hissed urgently at her side. She didn't have time to reply before getting barreled over by Shadeheart.

"We always have to fight each other during these skirmishes, don't we?" Spottedbelly spat as she kicked at the dark warrior's exposed belly. He smirked, pinning her down still as if oblivious to her struggling. "You're always an easy win," he replied simply. Letting out a hate-filled hiss, the tortoiseshell aimed her jaws at Shadeheart's throat, hoping to sink her fangs into his flesh. He jerked his neck out of reach, forcing Spottedbelly to cut her attack short. She paused for a moment as he aimed to bite at her throat, and with all her might kicked the dark-colored cat in the gut. Shadeheart gulped and lumbered off, allowing for Spottedbelly to rise to her paws. "Take this!" she spat, swatting at the tabby's large head, hitting his muzzle. Blood spattered onto the trampled grass beneath them as another cat joined their fight.

Hollowpaw jumped onto Shadeheart's back in a flash of ginger, Downpaw joining the onslaught heartbeats later. The two apprentices pinned him to the ground with their combined weight and quickly sent the tom to retreating. The mottled she-cat flicked her ears back agitatedly. Why was everyone insisting on cutting in on her fights? Hollowpaw meowed hoarsely, "Are you all right?" Spottedbelly nodded brusquely, still perturbed.

A lingering yowl sounded from nearby, making all the wrestling bodies stop and separate from one another. Blood coated Ripplepond's face entirely as he yowled authoritatively, "RainClan, retreat!" Hisses of dismay came from the Clan cats, including Spottedbelly as Ripplepond stepped aside to reveal Blizzardfur's battered, limp body. Quakeheart and the light brown tom supported the deputy between them and began padding back to camp. Mightyleap, bleeding heavily from the ear, followed close behind by Icepath and Feathermoon. The others gradually pulled away to the chorus of NightClan's jubilant yowls. Spottedbelly couldn't believe it. They had just lost claim to a strong-hold on the border, and now with Blizzardfur down, what would they do?

The two senior warriors carefully carried Blizzardfur's unconscious body down into the grassy knoll which was RainClan's camp. A cool leaf-fall breeze swept across the plateau and rustled the golden leaves above. Burnfeather and her two kits padded out of the nursery; a hollowed out log that was nestled between some boulders and bracken. She pushed her kits back into the den when she saw how horrible a shape the cats were in as one by one they filed into the clearing. Heatherstar immediately padded forward to confront Ripplepond and Quakeheart, who had placed the RainClan deputy's body before her den. Spottedbelly flicked her ears as she saw Fallstep and Blackpaw emerge from the medicine cat den (three clumps of bracken backed by a stone) with herbs in their mouths. Fallstep immediately went to Blizzardfur's side while Blackpaw went to treating the other warriors who had fought.

Now the whole Clan was here, sitting in camp with blank or horrified expressions. Blackpaw was tending to Laureltail next to the mottled she-cat as Tangleclaw pushed up to her other side. "Spottedbelly, are you all right?" she meowed worriedly, nosing her white muzzle in her shoulder fur. "I'm fine. I didn't get a scratch," she added scathingly. Tangleclaw swished her calico tail and replied, "Well that's good." Oblivious to emotions as always, Spottedbelly thought.

Blackpaw finished with Laureltail and began sniffing through the mottled warrior's fur. Interjecting, Spottedbelly meowed, "Don't waste your time with me! I wasn't hurt." Darkpaw ignored her other than twitching her ears to show she had heard. Several moments later the white apprentice mewed, "Your ear isn't in the best of shape. Come by Fallstep's den later for us to treat it." Spottedbelly lashed her tail as Blackpaw moved on to the others. Tanglewish watched her go before meowing, "I wish I'd have been there. If we had teamed up, all of NightClan would be whimpering in their nursery."

Spottedbelly mrrowed laughter and replied, "Yeah, those big old cats wouldn't know what hit them." Tangleclaw purred.

"Will he be all right?" Spottedbelly and the others turned their heads to see Heatherstar leaning over Blizzardfur, her eyes surveying his wounds worriedly. Fallstep had just finished applying the poultices and cobweb. He lifted his dark head and meowed in his deep voice, "Only time will tell, I'm afraid. He suffered a good blow to the head and another scored where his spine is." Hurried murmurs ran through the assembled Clan. Tangleclaw and Spottedbelly shared a glance. What if he didn't make it?

The tortoiseshell knew that Heatherstar would very well be able to choose a new deputy; there were prime candidates already for the position, but the tabby leader was specifically attached to Blizzardfur. Spottedbelly could imagine that her leader would go mad in grief, just like she would if she lost Tangleclaw or Laureltail. Dipping her head slightly, she leaned toward Laureltail who immediately supported her. He swished his white tail and frowned, probably thinking the same things that almost everyone else was thinking.

Tanglewish kneaded her claws into the grass. "Did you see who did that to him?" she meowed questioningly, wanting more answers Spottedbelly fancied. The two tortoiseshell warriors shook their heads. Laureltail meowed, "I was too busy fighting - but I bet Graytiger did it." Spottedbelly nodded slowly. "It is more likely that they were fighting each other." Tangleclaw nodded as if agreeing.

Heatherstar hopped up onto her den known as the round stone and meowed, "May all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here before the round stone for a Clan meeting." It was clearly just for the sake of tradition, for the cats were already all here. The brown leader hung her head and meowed, "There are several things we must attend to tonight. Fallstep's prognosis of Blizzardfur is that... he probably won't make it." she paused as anguished yowls came from the cats below her. She continued softly, "I must choose a replacement to fill in his spot until we find out what is truly to become of him. Until the future of Blizzardfur is determined, I name Quakeheart as the replacement deputy." Congratulatory mews came from some of the cats around the large brown tabby, but the occasion really wasn't something to be joyous about.

Heatherstar meowed, "I had been planning on naming two new warriors today, and I suppose I still should. I shouldn't take their day away from them because of misfortune in battle." "Downpaw and Hollowpaw, please step forward," she meowed, a new clarity in her voice. The two apprentices padded forward with vainly suppressed pride brimming from their pelts.

Spottedbelly glanced at Downbreeze and Hollowsplash as they padded up the grassy slope and down the boulders. They would guard the camp tonight at the bottom of the climb, so as no danger could reach RainClan's high refuge. The tortoiseshell did not envy them; her legs were trembling with fatigue. Tangleclaw prodded her with her muzzle as she padded by, making Spottedbelly start and glare at her as she retreated to the warrior's den. Sighing, she watched as Laurelflight and Ripplepond went past her as well, the looks in their eyes telling the she-cat that they were too tired to notice her. Tail drooping, she followed the others but was made to stop in her tracks as she heard her name being called. She turned to see Heatherstar, standing outside her den in the round stone. The leader's light tabby fur looked ghostly pale in the dimming twilight as Spottedbelly padded over to her. The RainClan leader touched her nose to the warrior's.

"How are you faring?" Heatherstar meowed. Spottedbelly nodded and mewed hoarsely, "Fine, I'm fine." She didn't seem to believe the tortoiseshell, but she inevitably dropped it. After a moment of silence the warrior mewed slowly, "Was there anything else?" "Come into my den."

The two she-cats soon found themselves sitting inside the leader's den, the dead grass pricking Spottedbelly's paw pads. Heatherstar settled herself despondently in her nest of moss, leaves, and feathers, her eyes growing distant. The dark she-cat opposite her remained quiet, waiting for her leader to grow comfortable. "No small talk," Heatherstar mewed suddenly, tucking her paws underneath her breast and becoming still. Spottedbelly simply blinked and nodded. Letting out a sigh, the tabby began, "I'm going to make you my new deputy if Blizzardfur doesn't live."

Spottedbelly's eyes flew open and her claws unsheathed out of shock. "What?" she breathed, utter disbelief emanating in her voice. The she-cat's voice became placid as she continued, "What about Ripplepond and Quakeheart? They are certainly more deserving-" "No," Heatherstar interrupted, "I want a deputy that is young and can be lively. I'm tired of the expected 'senior' deputy that is all business."

The RainClan warrior tucked her tail close against her side as she pondered this slowly. This sounds like Heatherstar, she reassured herself, hoping that this choice wasn't out of confusion and madness over Blizzardfur's unknown fate. All the while, she became aware of Heatherstar's dark gaze looking over her, as if analyzing every emotion that passed through Spottedbelly's green eyes.

"Are there any other reasons you would want me?" she jested half-heartedly. Heatherstar released the apparent tension that had begun building up and mewed, "Of course - you're a thoughtful young she-cat with much promise." Spottedbelly couldn't help note that the leader was more comfortable now that she had seemed to accept her decision. Heatherstar touched her tail tip to the warrior's shoulder, silently dismissing her. Spottedbelly was glad to leave, and didn't bother to look back as she exited the den.

xXx

Spottedbelly awoke early. The chirping of cicadas was still going strong, meaning that the morning had not yet come. She deciphered that the birds would not come to signal sunrise until much later. Stretching out a leg, she glanced around her, noticing that Laureltail and Tanglewish were sleeping right up against her. Tail curling in amusement, she carefully stood up and picked her way around the sleeping bodies. Their warmth left her as she exited the warrior's den (an overhanging bush) and went into the main clearing. The grassy plateau was bathed in dimming moonlight, the sky beginning to become etched with lavender and light blue.

Padding silently past the round stone, she noticed that Blizzardfur was no longer laying out in front of its base; Spottedbelly could bet that Heatherstar was both dismayed and relieved by that. Choosing another route, the she-cat padded swiftly over to the medicine cat den. Hopefully Fallstep and Blackpaw would not take her visit with unwelcoming attitudes. She poked her head through the bracken and immediately saw the two cats. As expected, Fallstep immediately stirred. As he began to stand, Spottedbelly saw Blizzardfur who was concealed behind the dark gray tom. He could tell that that was what she was looking at as he meowed, "I couldn't let him get cold." The she-cat blinked; she hadn't thought of that.

These are quite nice; it's a shame no one seems to give them the proper credit they deserve.

I thought the battle could have started with more of a reason. Maybe two or more jeers, unless the depuy was like that.
