"What are you doing, Graytiger?" Blizzardfur mewed cooly in his deep voice, staring down the NightClan deputy with his placid gaze. Graytiger lashed his bushy tail and growled, "Nothing! We were on our side of the stream!" The white Rainclan deputy flicked his tail dismissively and countered coldly, "Since when was your side a fox length away from the real border?"
Spottedbelly and company were just beginning to mingle back into the patrol, their numbers swelling with at least eight warriors. Graytiger and his patrol glared at them fiercely, anger brimming from their bristling pelts. Mightyleap came to stand on Blizzardfur's left flank, Quakeheart on the deputy's right. Blizzardfur's amber eyes turned to slits as Graytiger replied dryly, "Since now, I suppose. After all, it's not like RainClan can actually defend its borders." Spottedbelly unsheathed her claws and growled under her breath. How naive! she thought mockingly, wondering what they would say once she had a claw in one of their throats. Beside her, Laureltail was the same, a terrible anger in his eyes.
Icepath and Feathermoon let out defiant yowls of outrage, and two NightClan warriors let out caterwauls as well. Spottedbelly tried to identify the warriors that were trespassing, but could only register Shadeheart and Graytiger. The others were anonymous to her.
Blizzardfur lashed his tail for silence in his group, glaring at the intruders with malice. "Is it a fight that you want, code breakers?" He spat. All of the cats looked to be bracing themselves as Graytiger's hoarse mew answered, "If you have a death wish; sure!" The two deputies lashed their tails, issuing the charge.
Spottedbelly immediately found herself being challenged by a brown and white tom, his fangs bared and his claws lashing at her muzzle. Spitting furiously, she side-stepped and lunged at the tom's side. She landed a blow to his shoulder but was loosened by a strong cuff to the ear. Spottedbelly ignored the pain and attacked again, this time getting a firm grip on his front leg. The mottled she-cat pulled hard and sent the tom to yanking himself free and stumbling backward. Flowerpool took over rather quickly and sent the tom running off into NightClan territory. "And don't come back, Longfeather!" the tabby warrior yowled, throwing herself into the battle again. Spottedbelly veered around, looking for another opponent. "Spottedbelly, look out!" Laureltail's voice hissed urgently at her side. She didn't have time to reply before getting barreled over by Shadeheart.
"We always have to fight each other during these skirmishes, don't we?" Spottedbelly spat as she kicked at the dark warrior's exposed belly. He smirked, pinning her down still as if oblivious to her struggling. "You're always an easy win," he replied simply. Letting out a hate-filled hiss, the tortoiseshell aimed her jaws at Shadeheart's throat, hoping to sink her fangs into his flesh. He jerked his neck out of reach, forcing Spottedbelly to cut her attack short. She paused for a moment as he aimed to bite at her throat, and with all her might kicked the dark-colored cat in the gut. Shadeheart gulped and lumbered off, allowing for Spottedbelly to rise to her paws. "Take this!" she spat, swatting at the tabby's large head, hitting his muzzle. Blood spattered onto the trampled grass beneath them as another cat joined their fight.
Hollowpaw jumped onto Shadeheart's back in a flash of ginger, Downpaw joining the onslaught heartbeats later. The two apprentices pinned him to the ground with their combined weight and quickly sent the tom to retreating. The mottled she-cat flicked her ears back agitatedly. Why was everyone insisting on cutting in on her fights? Hollowpaw meowed hoarsely, "Are you all right?" Spottedbelly nodded brusquely, still perturbed.
A lingering yowl sounded from nearby, making all the wrestling bodies stop and separate from one another. Blood coated Ripplepond's face entirely as he yowled authoritatively, "RainClan, retreat!" Hisses of dismay came from the Clan cats, including Spottedbelly as Ripplepond stepped aside to reveal Blizzardfur's battered, limp body. Quakeheart and the light brown tom supported the deputy between them and began padding back to camp. Mightyleap, bleeding heavily from the ear, followed close behind by Icepath and Feathermoon. The others gradually pulled away to the chorus of NightClan's jubilant yowls. Spottedbelly couldn't believe it. They had just lost claim to a strong-hold on the border, and now with Blizzardfur down, what would they do?
