Spottedbelly sat before a row of StarClan cats. Their pelts shimmered like the stars and their eyes glowed like the far off planets seen from earth, just like her.
As her fur swayed gently from an invisible breeze, she felt cats beside her, but she couldn't see them. Spottedbelly looked down at her paws and gazed at her shimmering claws that sparkled like dew. "To be of StarClan," she thought as she looked down the row of cats. Their eyes held no emotion and their pelts displayed no characteristics. Spotedbelly wanted to speak up, but couldn't find the heart to do so. While in her new, sacred and spirit-like body, she felt renewed
and changed, as if the soul of herself had been cleaned and made sinless. No burdens you'd think, but no. Racing thoughts bounded through her mind and destroyed her new found peace. Thoughts of Purestar and of being the only deputy struck her. Breezepaw, Minnowpaw, Swiftstone, Ambereyes...she was leaving them. Then came Skystar and when he had found her that day and led her to RiverClan. Last of all came thoughts of her friends and Icestorm...her kits.
She glanced at her chest with sorrow.
A StarClan cat stepped forward at that moment and padded toward her. Her dappled coat and slender form became more visible as she came. Her blue eyes sparkled as she looked down upon her former warrior, as she had only known as a kit, as Spottedkit. "Dawnstar..?" Spottedbelly mewed slowly. Her old leader lowered her muzzle slightly. The old RainClan leader stepped aside and swished her tail. Spottedbelly stared where her tail had lashed and gasped. Scenes from the present played before her...of her old Clan. She saw Heatherstar standing beside Blizzardfur on the Bigstone. She saw Barkkit, who was now a young and strong warrior before her. She caught a glimse of Tangleclaw, her oldest, yet most dearest friend. Sorrow gripped Spottedbelly as she saw kits trail behind her friend. The queen smiled and nodded to someone who wasn't being shown in the picture. Then suddenly he was. Laureltail padded up to Tangleclaw and brushed his muzzle against hers. Tears brimmed Spottedbelly's eyes as she saw how much her friends had moved on.
Dawnstar showed a look of pity on her face. Spotedbelly caught her and growled slightly. More Starry cats padded out of their orderly line and stepped forward.
Dawnstar backed up to aline with them. They began to chant, first in a soft murmur and then in a loud yowling. "Why did you forget us? Why are you running?
Why didn't you come find us? Why?" Then the cries turned into utter wailing. Their mournful yowls filled the quiet forest and broke Spottedbelly's heart to shards. "Stop! I-I didn't leave-" The wailings increased as Spottedbelly continued, "I had to move on just...just like my friends did."
The cries stopped suddenly at the end of her words. A StarClan kit bounded forward toward the grey she-cat. A white she-cat stepped after him, but didn't pursue her gesture. The kit stopped before Spottedbelly and looked into her eyes. Spottedbelly knew immediately who it was.
"Webkit..." she wailed softly. The grey kit ruffled his shimmering fur. "I've been watching you," he mewed with a glint of mischeif in his eyes. The tone of his voice was soft and gentle though as he spoke. "Why have you been trying to escape me?" Spottedbelly gulped and guilt gripped her. "Burnfeather...she-she doesn't blame you...neither do I." She was touched but was hurt too by his words. "Why did you leave and come under skies that you do not know?" Webkit mewed, "We still love you, Spottedbelly." Pictures of Wailheart and Smogpelt flashed before her. "Come home," he persisted. Spottedbelly was speachless.
"Your home lies in RainClan, Spottedbelly. You were mentored there, raised there. Flowerpool, Icepath, Barkfrost, Fallstep, Lotuswing, they miss you. They are your family." Webkit paused, "Come home." "You are RainClan!" The StarClan cats jeered. "I know you have chosen a path among these forest cats, but you have not been here long," Webkit mewed pleadingly, "these things can be easily broken."
Confused and scared, she could only muster the sentence, "but I am dead..." Webkit shook his head, glad that she didn't actually decline. "No," he whispered,
"We are merely holding your council. You live, Spottedbelly." "My kits," she mumbled. Webkit raised his little muzzle with a proud smile. "They still thrive inside of you. They will be beautiful RainClan cats." Spottedbelly shook her head slowly, "No, Webkit, I can't. I'll be leaving so many behind." "RainClan is your home. It always calls...home always calls," the kit mewed, "doesn't it?" Spottedbelly felt that familair tug at her belly, of longing. Webkit looked into her eyes once more and could see the pain. "At least come visit..." The thought swirled in her head and Spottedbelly wanted nothing more then to take it, but at that moment she felt kicking in her belly. "Not now," She meowed. "Soon?" Webkit muttered hopefully. Spottedbelly stretched her neck to touch noses with the kit. "Soon."
Webkit licked her nose and then bounded away back to the white she-cat. The last thing she saw before she awoke in the meadow, surrounded by her friends, was Webkit looking back at her with the same playfulness and youth that she had always loved seeing back in RiverClan.
