Chapter 1
Break away
A pulsating heart charged through the wall of snow. Gray
fur covered in white moved up and down from the restless life within.
Paws furiously pounded at the frozen earth, running like a spirit
through the endless trees. The soft pads of his feet bled and ached, but
kept on running. Warm breath escaped from panting jaws. Like a
raging fire, silver puffs came from the mouth. Crazed eyes fixed on the
sight ahead tore through the dead under growth.
Angry clouds above shed snow on to the ground. The white trees
sighed in the silver wind. The snow covered forest died around the rest-
less soul. Freezing life surrounded him. Death and shadows hung
around every bend.
Eyes fixed ahead, he stuck to one path. Leaving paw prints
in the ground behind him. Newly falling snow covered the past move-
ment of journey, while new marks of travel printed on the ground.
He burst through another mound of snow that was up to his
throat, and abrutly stopped. Paws trembling, he panted. Running
was out of the question anymore. His strength was depleted, he
needed moments rest.
"Thy restless soul, is tiring slowly. Death and sorrow lashes
out like a rabid beast. Thy life is in his ivory claws..." sighed a
voice far above. He raised his muzzle to the crisp sky, to see the 1
sound up high.
"Wolf! Wolf!," it cried in its shrewd voice.
The gray head covered in white got beaten by the cold wind.
A black shape became visible in front of the clouds, riding on
this wind. "Sky!" it cawed. He stared as the bird flew down
like a living shadow toward the snow.
A dead tree is where the shadow landed. It cocked its head
in a mocking way, and croaked, "Sky!"
"What?," he growled.
"Wolf of one, wich should be more," the bird said with a caw.
The he-wolf bared his yellow fangs at the creature. "Where death
presides, my kind shall fly," the dark bird continued. "Stop
following me," the wolf spat.
"I be raven, you be wolf," it cried, " you are Sky, I am
Kia!"
"How do you know my name?" Sky barked. "Brother of
earth! Brother of sky!" the he-bird called.
Sky had no time for this. The snow came down harder on
his back. He needed to run, get away, break away, go as far as
possible. "I have no time for this!" he howled. Silver wind
urged him forward. With not a look more at the raven, his scarred
paws shot him forward. Trees swayed all around the gray wolf in
a whispering frenzy. Heartbeat quickening, he fought the cold
and surged forward along the path of endless sights and sounds
"Never ending journey, earth, sun, moon, and stars align.
Nothing is truly worth while," Kia called. The shadow raven
was still following him. 2
Large wings of plague and sickness swooped down. Eyes
fixed on the road ahead turned and glanced at the bird. "Run,
run as fast as you can. Destiny! Faith! It all awaits!" Kia
cawed. Blood eyes met his yellow eyes in a flash. Sky let a
rumbling growl of disgust.
Freezing snow turned into cold stone as he started to
run up a steep hill. Silver puffs of air swirled around his
fangs. Panting, but not stumbling he cleanly climbed the
forest hill. Scenting pine in his nostrils, he grunted, and came
to a stop.
A sheer drop was before him, and the rest of the never
ending wood.
He sniffed the ground and sky. Rare, unmarked territory
was before him. He would rest here. He had gone far enough,
for now.
"Thy journey is before thee, gray, black, and white!"
Sky looked up at the sky. Kia was on a black sickly
branch covered with snow like the back of the he-wolf.
"Caww!"
"What do you want from me?" Sky barked.
Kia cocked his triangular head, with no expression
in his blood red eyes.
"Answer me!" He howled demandingly.
"Nothing physical, and nothing of mind, young wolf,"
the raven shrieked.
Sky lowered his head in an aggressive snarl. "You have
no business with me! Now, be gone!" 3
"Caww!"
Kia outstretched his sinister wings, and flew off.
With a grunt of satisfaction, he put his full attention
on the task at hand: finding shelter.
Soft soil was beneath his paws. A ring of trees encircled
a large mound of dirt. The trees bent inward from the wait of the
snow to form a shelter. It wasn't very durable, and didn't protect
him from the cold. Though it would keep him dry and safe, and
it was just big enough for him. Temporary and compatable it was,
and that was all he needed.
Sky had found a path down to a small clearing below the
ledge. This sight was far enough from the cliff so tumbling rocks
wouldn't break into the site.
The he-wolf crawled out of a gap in the trees. He scent
marked the perimeter of the base, so other beasts can sense that
there is now a wolf on the territory. Sky shook his pelt to rid
himself of the snow before sucumbing to hunger.
On top of the hill Sky remembered seeing a river in the
nearby distance. He decided that every day he would slowly travel
to the river. A little bit today, more tommorrow.
Slowly, Sky padded out deeper into the wood, while also
making sure to look at every shadow and nook in turn. He had no
idea of what might lurk in the depths of this neck of the woods.
An oak that towered to the sky appeared on the side of the
path. Sky raked his claws against the tough tree bark. It easily
ripped away to reveal a softer core. He also scent marked it before 4
moving on.
A gangly sapling showed in front of the young wolf. Just
like the oak, Sky scratched the base of the tree, leaving a mark.
Then he scent marked the ground. He would stop here for today.
Sky pricked his ears for fresh meat. Opening his jaws, he scented
the air. His pupils slitted at the smell and sound of pumping blood.
Undergrowth made it easy for a silent approach. Sky hid
behind a tree, and peered with one eye showing. A doe and her fawn
muzzled through the snow for grass stubs. His eyes widened with
hunger. With only himself it would be hard to kill a full grown doe.
He probably could though, but it would just deplete needed energy.
The fawn he could muster, but he would have to wait for it to
stray from it's mother. He had an idea to make the process go faster.
Sky shot from tree to tree, while staying under cover from the
doe, but be noticable to the fawn.
The fawn saw a flash of his fur, and got curious. With the
doe's eyes focused on the ground, she didn't notice Sky lunging.
Sky shot out from behind a tree and sunk his teeth into
the fawn's throat. It's gargled cry startled the doe. At the
sight of her fawn in his jaws she sprinted away leaving a flury
of airborn snow behind. It twitched once or twice before going
limp. It's heart had stopped, it's soul had left, it had died.
Sky let go of the dead body. It fell to the ground. He
touched his nose to the cooling body, then he began to satisfy
his hunger.
Blood drenched his muzzle and paws. When Sky 5
had finished he buried the rest of the body under the snow
to preserve the remains. With a full belly he contentedly
padded for his new den.
Sky followed his marks back to the base. Sky walked
up to the bending saplings, before stopping. He pricked his
ears again, and listened intentivly.
"Caww!"
Sky's ears flattened against his neck at that sound.
"Making progress, that I see, Finding truth though,
I don't see!" Kia squaked. He was sitting on one of the
saplings. The shadow cocked his head, then croaked,
"If thy needith thee, then thy sing to the heavens. I shall
be waiting!"
Sky opened his mouth, about to speak, but was cut
off by the raven.
"Naive, and in vain ye be, but brave and strong to be!"
The bird spread his wings then flew off.
"Caww!"
Sky growled inwardly. "Annoying creton," he thought.
Dark clouds covered the sky, snowing. It made it impossible
to tell sunrise from sunset, so Sky just relied on his instincts,
and decided to rest.
He crawled through a gap in the branches. He pawed
the soft, cool soil. Sky layed on the dirt, and curled up for
warmth.
"I've been running for two sunsets, but I have to keep
going," he thought, "at least until I...-I must break away." 6
