Chapter 1
Break away

A pulsating heart charged through the wall of snow. Gray
fur covered in white moved up and down from the restless life within.
Paws furiously pounded at the frozen earth, running like a spirit
through the endless trees. The soft pads of his feet bled and ached, but
kept on running. Warm breath escaped from panting jaws. Like a
raging fire, silver puffs came from the mouth. Crazed eyes fixed on the
sight ahead tore through the dead under growth.
Angry clouds above shed snow on to the ground. The white trees
sighed in the silver wind. The snow covered forest died around the rest-
less soul. Freezing life surrounded him. Death and shadows hung
around every bend.
Eyes fixed ahead, he stuck to one path. Leaving paw prints
in the ground behind him. Newly falling snow covered the past move-
ment of journey, while new marks of travel printed on the ground.
He burst through another mound of snow that was up to his
throat, and abrutly stopped. Paws trembling, he panted. Running
was out of the question anymore. His strength was depleted, he
needed moments rest.
"Thy restless soul, is tiring slowly. Death and sorrow lashes
out like a rabid beast. Thy life is in his ivory claws..." sighed a
voice far above. He raised his muzzle to the crisp sky, to see the 1
sound up high.
"Wolf! Wolf!," it cried in its shrewd voice.
The gray head covered in white got beaten by the cold wind.
A black shape became visible in front of the clouds, riding on
this wind. "Sky!" it cawed. He stared as the bird flew down
like a living shadow toward the snow.
A dead tree is where the shadow landed. It cocked its head
in a mocking way, and croaked, "Sky!"
"What?," he growled.
"Wolf of one, wich should be more," the bird said with a caw.
The he-wolf bared his yellow fangs at the creature. "Where death
presides, my kind shall fly," the dark bird continued. "Stop
following me," the wolf spat.
"I be raven, you be wolf," it cried, " you are Sky, I am
Kia!"
"How do you know my name?" Sky barked. "Brother of
earth! Brother of sky!" the he-bird called.
Sky had no time for this. The snow came down harder on
his back. He needed to run, get away, break away, go as far as
possible. "I have no time for this!" he howled. Silver wind
urged him forward. With not a look more at the raven, his scarred
paws shot him forward. Trees swayed all around the gray wolf in
a whispering frenzy. Heartbeat quickening, he fought the cold
and surged forward along the path of endless sights and sounds
"Never ending journey, earth, sun, moon, and stars align.
Nothing is truly worth while," Kia called. The shadow raven
was still following him. 2
Large wings of plague and sickness swooped down. Eyes
fixed on the road ahead turned and glanced at the bird. "Run,
run as fast as you can. Destiny! Faith! It all awaits!" Kia
cawed. Blood eyes met his yellow eyes in a flash. Sky let a
rumbling growl of disgust.
Freezing snow turned into cold stone as he started to
run up a steep hill. Silver puffs of air swirled around his
fangs. Panting, but not stumbling he cleanly climbed the
forest hill. Scenting pine in his nostrils, he grunted, and came
to a stop.
A sheer drop was before him, and the rest of the never
ending wood.
He sniffed the ground and sky. Rare, unmarked territory
was before him. He would rest here. He had gone far enough,
for now.
"Thy journey is before thee, gray, black, and white!"
Sky looked up at the sky. Kia was on a black sickly
branch covered with snow like the back of the he-wolf.
"Caww!"
"What do you want from me?" Sky barked.
Kia cocked his triangular head, with no expression
in his blood red eyes.
"Answer me!" He howled demandingly.
"Nothing physical, and nothing of mind, young wolf,"
the raven shrieked.
Sky lowered his head in an aggressive snarl. "You have
no business with me! Now, be gone!" 3
"Caww!"
Kia outstretched his sinister wings, and flew off.
With a grunt of satisfaction, he put his full attention
on the task at hand: finding shelter.

Soft soil was beneath his paws. A ring of trees encircled
a large mound of dirt. The trees bent inward from the wait of the
snow to form a shelter. It wasn't very durable, and didn't protect
him from the cold. Though it would keep him dry and safe, and
it was just big enough for him. Temporary and compatable it was,
and that was all he needed.
Sky had found a path down to a small clearing below the
ledge. This sight was far enough from the cliff so tumbling rocks
wouldn't break into the site.
The he-wolf crawled out of a gap in the trees. He scent
marked the perimeter of the base, so other beasts can sense that
there is now a wolf on the territory. Sky shook his pelt to rid
himself of the snow before sucumbing to hunger.
On top of the hill Sky remembered seeing a river in the
nearby distance. He decided that every day he would slowly travel
to the river. A little bit today, more tommorrow.
Slowly, Sky padded out deeper into the wood, while also
making sure to look at every shadow and nook in turn. He had no
idea of what might lurk in the depths of this neck of the woods.
An oak that towered to the sky appeared on the side of the
path. Sky raked his claws against the tough tree bark. It easily
ripped away to reveal a softer core. He also scent marked it before 4
moving on.
A gangly sapling showed in front of the young wolf. Just
like the oak, Sky scratched the base of the tree, leaving a mark.
Then he scent marked the ground. He would stop here for today.
Sky pricked his ears for fresh meat. Opening his jaws, he scented
the air. His pupils slitted at the smell and sound of pumping blood.
Undergrowth made it easy for a silent approach. Sky hid
behind a tree, and peered with one eye showing. A doe and her fawn
muzzled through the snow for grass stubs. His eyes widened with
hunger. With only himself it would be hard to kill a full grown doe.
He probably could though, but it would just deplete needed energy.
The fawn he could muster, but he would have to wait for it to
stray from it's mother. He had an idea to make the process go faster.
Sky shot from tree to tree, while staying under cover from the
doe, but be noticable to the fawn.
The fawn saw a flash of his fur, and got curious. With the
doe's eyes focused on the ground, she didn't notice Sky lunging.
Sky shot out from behind a tree and sunk his teeth into
the fawn's throat. It's gargled cry startled the doe. At the
sight of her fawn in his jaws she sprinted away leaving a flury
of airborn snow behind. It twitched once or twice before going
limp. It's heart had stopped, it's soul had left, it had died.
Sky let go of the dead body. It fell to the ground. He
touched his nose to the cooling body, then he began to satisfy
his hunger.

Blood drenched his muzzle and paws. When Sky 5
had finished he buried the rest of the body under the snow
to preserve the remains. With a full belly he contentedly
padded for his new den.
Sky followed his marks back to the base. Sky walked
up to the bending saplings, before stopping. He pricked his
ears again, and listened intentivly.
"Caww!"
Sky's ears flattened against his neck at that sound.
"Making progress, that I see, Finding truth though,
I don't see!" Kia squaked. He was sitting on one of the
saplings. The shadow cocked his head, then croaked,
"If thy needith thee, then thy sing to the heavens. I shall
be waiting!"
Sky opened his mouth, about to speak, but was cut
off by the raven.
"Naive, and in vain ye be, but brave and strong to be!"
The bird spread his wings then flew off.
"Caww!"
Sky growled inwardly. "Annoying creton," he thought.
Dark clouds covered the sky, snowing. It made it impossible
to tell sunrise from sunset, so Sky just relied on his instincts,
and decided to rest.
He crawled through a gap in the branches. He pawed
the soft, cool soil. Sky layed on the dirt, and curled up for
warmth.
"I've been running for two sunsets, but I have to keep
going," he thought, "at least until I...-I must break away." 6

Chapter 2
Sky

"Caww!"
Sky growled. He opened his eyes to bright sunlight.
Melting snow hit his black nose. Sleepily shaking it off, he got up
and crawled out of the circle of dead saplings.
"Sunrise, a new day. The sun is shining! The sky is clear!"
Kia shrieked.
"This better be important," Sky barked. Sky was starting
to except the fact that this bird won't go away. "I'll make him
useful," he thought.
"It always will be, young earth-walker," the shadow cawwed.
Reading his thoughts, he must.
"Well, what is so important," Sky howled angrily.
"Sky holds night and day, sing to the moon, wich hithers
at darkness," the raven croaked.
"Need you always speak with phrases and metaphors?"
Sky spat.
"Thy star in the night sky," the shadow squaked.
A sharp bark rumbled in his throat. He swallowed it back.
The tip of his silver tail twitched out of annoyance. Kia cocked
his head. He opened his beak in a silent screach, and cocked his
head to the other side. 7
Sky was focused on the bird, thinking of a sharp reply.
Kia's tail feathers stretched out then in.
"Caww!"
Kia lifted his shadowy wings then flew off.
Sky shook his fur. He sniffed the ground and air for
traces of overnight visitors. All he could scent was water
and the taint of the raven. Sky ran over to a nearby oak tree.
Snow was nothing but slush now, but new snow would
probably fall next sunrise. The short fur on his paws was soaked
with water.
The oak was black and wet. Sky scraped his long claws
over the soggy bark. The strips fell to the ground. After marking
the tree, he looked around for fallen branches.
The heavy onslaught of snow that occured last sunhigh
must of taken down a dead or weak limb, and with it still being
very cold despite the strong sunshine, there was bound to be fresh
water.
Sky stumbled upon a large branch with smaller joints
jutting out everywere. He padded around the jumble for anything
that shone in the light.
Sky's yellow eyes caught something shining on a branch.
He got to it, and identified it as an icicle. He licked the ice once
or twice before snapping it off the branch with his teeth.
Using his teeth he crushed it between his fangs. Satisfied,
he walked lazily to a patch a of dirt. He layed down and stretched
out his limbs. They cracked and hurt from stiffness. He would run
himself to death. 8
Yellow eyes surveyed the camp, before closing and taking
the body to slumber.

Sun hit the dead earth. Warmth drenched the forest
landscape. Like the living dead, creatures showed themselves
once more. Ribs showed through their battered pelts. Sacs of bones
limped and moaned out of the sinister forest. Packs of blood drinkers
would pick them off like flys, and would spread like disease. Powerful
flesh and bones would patrol the forest and destroy its life. The
soul of the wood would hither and then die.
One beast was already apparent. Muzzles filled with
daggers were stained with innocent blood. A song soars to the sky
like a black raven. A secret code that sounds sweet to the mortal
ear.
Gray clouds of doom slowly tumble towards the golden
orb of fire. Darkness starts to the cover the ground. Light
doesn't stand a chance.
Sun turned the earth yellow. Warmth filled the spaces
between trees and rocks. Almost like a curse, death itself, in the
form of beasts, loomed around with sunken eyes. Flies buzzed around
their hides. Scents of carrion drifted through the forest, appearing
as an omen. Sinister, snarling demons lingered in the darkness.
Waiting behind stones and trees, turning the forest into a
forsaken place. May they be loved or hated, they roamed the
wood like a plague that was allied with the ice.

Yellow eyes flashed open. Gray fur rose up and down 9
with the soul crying within. Air was sucked into the jaws
making the blood that burned inside the flesh pulsate. The
beast got on to his paws. Claws shifted the loose dirt under
his beaten pads.
Sky scented the ground and sky. Clouds had covered
the sun. A cold ora of oncoming frost covered the forest floor.
The earth was now a silver world spotted with darkness, again.
Chilling winds swept around the trees. They blew into
Sky. Scents had traveled on the breeze. Sky sniffed the air
once more. He recoiled. The reak of badger and blood tainted
the air.
His black nose crinckled back, and his lips drew back
in a snarl.
The chilling wind had come from the beginning path of
the orb of fire, wich was the forest path to the river.
Claws of ripping strength battered the freezing earth,
as the gray he-wolf pounded for his target.
He swiveled around the bare trees. Going farther than
the other sun circle before, he whipped through the forest. The
taint of the black and white beast got stronger and stronger by
the paw step. Over a hundred trees separated him and the
rumbling river. The sound of the water flowed through this
section of the forest. The peaceful melody tumbled into his
ears. Sky had to fight an inwardly battle to keep his concentration
acutely on the badger threat. Luckily, the badger scent won.
Before hitting the river, his yellow eyes caught sight of
the miniature demon. 10
The creature was not an adult, for it was to small. It
looked like a pup outside of it's den
Wild eyes met Sky's yellow eyes for a split second, before
the pup turned around, and stumbled through the melting snow.
Sky padded after it. Gaining more speed after passing
every tree, he made a turn and ran along the riverbank.
A short tree with an extrodinarily wide trunk came
before him. Sky halted in suprise of it's girth. He slowly walked
up to it, while cautiously sniffing the air.
The strong reek of badger floated in the air like fog. The
pup had gone this way. Sky sniffed the ground. The pup's
unmistakable scent could be tracked to the bark.
Right beside the trunk a large badger set was present.
Sky pricked his ears, and lowered his muzzle to the burrow
entrance. He could smell fresh milk scent, and he could hear
the growls and squeels of the pups.
Sky raked his claws against the mush and dirt. If there
was any hope on getting rid of these threats to nonpermanent
territory, he would have to dig them out.
Snarling and growling came out of the gray carnivore,
as he tried to make a wider opening.
Sky stopped digging. He lowered his head closer to the
set's entrance. He couldn't hear the badger pups. Even when
straining to hear, he still heard nothing. Sky rose his head with
a vicious snarl.
Sky sniffed the air vainly.
The pups could have gone deeper into the set, but the roots 11
would make that much impossible," he thought, "the most
possible explaination would be that the pups somehow were smart
enough to escape through a secret backway."
The badger stink was so prominent here that it would be
very difficult to track them.
He snorted gruffly as he turned away from the enormous
tree. He would return tommorrow and search more thoroughly.
Sky scent marked and clawed some trees on the way back
to his den.

Sky stared up at the sky at his base outside of the saplings
circle.
A dull yellow orb was visible from behind the veil of clouds.
It was slowly flying to the place were it dies. Darkness would
soon take over the land.

Night slowly crept over like a wolf lurking after its pray.
Sky had crawled through the small gap in the branches, and
was lying peacefully on the dirt.
Sky began to close his eyes, but was disturbed. A low
howl swirled through the black sky. The song was birthed
somewhere further up the river.
Nervously, he swallowed back a reply to the enchanting
melody.
Distractedly, yellow eyes surveyed the camp through
the dead branches, before closing and taking the body to
slumber.
